On June 29, the Third Summit Forum of Marxism in the 21st Century was held in the Xingshen Building of the Balitai Campus of Nankai University, where famous scholars gathered to deeply study and understand Xi Jinping Thought on Culture, exchange views and discuss the theme of “Marxism in the 21st Century and the Building of Modern Civilization of the Chinese Nation”, and actively promote research on major theoretical and practical issues.
Yang Zhenwu, Member of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress, Wang Weiguang, Dean of the School of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and tenured Professor of Nankai University, Xing Yuanmin, Chairman of Tianjin Social Science Circles Federation and Former Chairman of the Tianjin Municipal Committee of the CPPCC, Chen Fukuan, Deputy Secretary of Tianjin Municipal Committee of the CPC, Xue Jinwen, former Secretary of the Party Committee of Nankai University, Yang Qingshan, Secretary of the Party Committee of Nankai University, Chen Yulu, President of Nankai University, Zhang Zhengwen, President of University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Xin Xiangyang, Dean of the School of Marxism of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Feng Ziyi, Director of the Center for Marxist Philosophy of Peking University, Zhu Guanglei, former Vice President of Nankai University, Wang Xinsheng, former Vice President of Nankai University and Dean of the School of Marxism of Nankai University, Zhang Renshan, Professor of the School of Law of Nanjing University, Gan Chunsong, Dean of the School of Philosophy of Nankai University, and Wang Lihua, outstanding Professor of Nankai University, attended the forum. Chen Yulu presided over the opening ceremony of the forum.
This forum is jointly hosted by Nankai University and the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, jointly-organized by the Research Institute for 21st Century Marxism, the School of Marxism, History, Law School, and Zhou Enlai School of Government of Nankai University, co-sponsored by the Chinese Association of Dialectic Materialism Study, the China Social Sciences Press, and the National Key Research Base for Textbook Construction of the Introduction to the Basic Principles of Marxism. Experts and scholars from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Party School of the Central Committee of CPC, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Beijing Normal University, China University of Political Science and Law, Jilin University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Nanjing University, Shandong University and other well-known universities attended the forum.
Yang Zhenwu said in his speech that the theme of this forum has important theoretical value and practical significance. The modern civilization of the Chinese nation cannot be built without the guidance of Marxism and the leadership of the Communist Party of China, the promotion of Chinese-style modernization, the fine traditional Chinese culture and the national spirit with patriotism as the core, and the law-based governance on all fronts. He hoped that the experts attending the forum will have in-depth exchanges and discussions, inspire insights and contribute theoretical strength.
Chen Fukuan welcomed the guests on behalf of Tianjin Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government. He said that Tianjin will further study and implement the guiding principles of Xi Jinping’s important speech during his inspection of Tianjin, and will more consciously shoulder the new cultural mission and make more contributions to accelerating the construction of the discipline system, academic system and discourse system of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics.
Yang Qingshan pointed out in his speech that holding the Marxism Summit Forum is of great significance for the in-depth study and implementation of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. He hoped that through this forum, we can better integrate the resources of Marxist theory, fine traditional Chinese culture and foreign philosophy and social science.
Zhang Zhengwen said that the forum will build a platform for the research, publicity and interpretation of Marxism in the 21st century and the building of modern Chinese civilization, and further promote the construction of the discipline system, academic system and discourse system of Xi Jinping Thought on Culture. He expected that under the promotion of the forum, research in related fields will continue to achieve new results and make new contributions.
While presiding over the opening ceremony of the forum, Chen Yulu stressed that the forum, as an important academic brand built by Nankai University and the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, is an important measure to learn and publicize Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. In the future, we will continue to build the Research Institute for 21st Century Marxism into a wisdom highland and academic peak, and make contributions to the continuous talent cultivation for the building of the modern civilization of the Chinese nation.
Wang Weiguang delivered a keynote speech entitled “Accelerating the Construction of a New Form of Modern Civilization of Chinese nation with Xi Jinping Thought on Culture as Guide”. He comprehensively analyzed the significance of Xi Jinping’s important expositions on building a modern civilization for the Chinese nation from three aspects:, to scientifically understand and graspthe important thought on building a modern civilization for the Chinese nation, modern civilization of Chinese nation is a new form of humankind civilization based on the Comprehensive development of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics and the approach to build the modern civilization of Chinese nation

Feng Ziyi, Zhu Guanglei, Zhang Renshan, Wang Lihua and Qian Chunsong respectively made thematic reports on “The Understanding and Grasp of the ‘Second Integration’” “Ten New Characteristics of the Change of China’s Class Pattern at the Present Stage” “Reflection on China’s Judicial Tradition and Its Modernity” “Ecological Civilization Becomes A Resolute Choice” “Cultural Attraction and Cultural Leadership”. Wang Xinsheng presided over the theme report session of the forum.
The forum also had four parallel forums, and participating scholars conducted in-depth discussions on “Two Integrations and the Building of Modern Civilization of the Chinese Nation” “Materialist Conception of History and the Building of Modern Civilization of the Chinese Nation” “Tradition and Modernity of Chinese Law Civilization” and “National Security and Governance of China in the New Era”.
During the forum, the second council meeting and the fourth academic guidance committee meeting of the Research Institute for 21st Century Marxism were held. Wang Weiguang, Yang Qingshan and Wang Xinsheng attended the meeting. Wang Xinsheng reported on the progress of the institute in the past five years, and introduced the situation of innovative collaborative development, important academic achievements, cooperative construction and talent exchange. The participating experts offered suggestions on the future development of the Institute.
It is reported that the Research Institute for 21st Century Marxism is a Marxist theoretical research platform, high-end think tank and reserve talent cultivation base jointly built by Nankai University and the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in 2019, focusing on the construction of contemporary China’s Marxist disciplinary system, academic system and discourse system, aiming to build a center of academic research, a top talent base and a communication platform for Chinese Marxism in the 21st century with wide influence at home and abroad.
The Summit Forum of Marxism in the 21st Century has been held twice since 2020 to promote the construction and dissemination of an independent knowledge system of “Chinese-style modernization”. The forum aims to build broad consensus and gather powerful strength for the building of modern civilization of Chinese nation through in-depth discussions among experts from different disciplines.
