The 16th Forum of the World Association for Political Economy was held in Pingtanfrom September 25 to 27, sponsored by the World Association for Political Economy, Fujian Normal University, Pingtan Comprehensive Experimental Zone, and the National Research Center for Political Economy of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics (Fujian Normal University). The theme of this forum was “Chinese-style modernization and the process of world modernization”. This forum was organized by the School of Economy of Fujian Normal University, the School of Marxism of Nankai University, and the Pingtan Comprehensive Experimental Zone, and was co-organized by the National Key Research Base for Ideological and Political Theory Courses, Studies on Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping Theories, Southeast Academic Research, Journal of Fujian Normal University and Review of Economic Research.
Cheng Enfu, President of the World Association for Political Economy, pointed out that a new round reforms of artificial intelligence technology and digital economy industry are going deeper, and the international balance of power is also going through drastically adjusting. We must not only see the problems and difficulties in the world economy, but also be deeply aware of the new pattern of world economic development and changes in global economic governance. The Chinese path to modernization is not the path of “Westernization”. It is an important task to promote the development of socialist modernization to construct an economic modernization evaluation system which is suitable for domestic and foreign reality and guided by modern Marxist economics.
Zong Wa, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Education Association for International Exchange, expressed warm congratulations on the launching ceremony of the forum in a video speech. He pointed out that expanding China’s education opening and strengthening international cooperation are not only urgent needs for education reform and development, but also a major topic of world concern and an important source of world economic development. Since its establishment, the China Education Association for International Exchange has given full play to its advantages and actively carried out international cooperation in education. In the future, the association will promote the development of Sino-foreign cooperative education to a high level and high-quality direction, promote the diversified cooperation between domestic universities and international first-class universities, and cultivate talents in scientific and technological innovation.
Pan Yuteng, Secretary of the Party Committee of Fujian Normal University, proposed that Chinese-style modernization has provided a new choice to realize modernization and a series of major issues for the world political economy circle. This forum will carry out in-depth discussions on the theme of “Chinese-style modernization and the process of world modernization”, which will certainly have a positive and far-reaching impact on the research and development of world political economy.
Lai Jun, Secretary of the Party Committee of Pingtan Comprehensive Experimental Zone, pointed out that the World Association for Political Economy has a high reputation and influence in the world and provides an important platform for promoting exchanges between contemporary Chinese Marxist political economy and world political economy. The holding of this forum will promote the development of Marxist political economics and provide valuable experience for Pingtan to integrate into global cooperation and development.
Ye Shen, Director of the Fujian Provincial Department of Education, said that the forum is of great significance to the construction of Marxist disciplines in Fujian Province. He hoped that leaders, experts, and scholars would discuss together how to promote cooperation between contemporary Chinese Marxist political economy and world political economy, and provide Fujian with more theoretical and intellectual support. He also hoped that Fujian Normal University would give full play to its unique advantages in researching, interpreting and publicizing Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.
At the launching ceremony, the list of winners of the 2023 “Marxian Economics Award” and “Distinguished Award of Political Economy of the 21st Century” wasannounced and the award ceremony was held. Professor Li Jianping and Professor Heinz Dieterich won the 2023 “Marxian Economics Award”. Professor Efe Can Gürcan, Professor Zhang Junshan, Professor C. Saratchand, Professor He Qianqiang, Mr. David Matters, Professor Zhang Xian, Professor Francesco Macheda, and Professor Sun Shaoyong won the 2023 “Distinguished Award of Political Economy of the 21st Century”.
The forum, held in Pingtan from September 25 to 27, was an important international academic conference organized by the School of Marxism of Nankai University. The forum held sub-forum reports, conference keynote reports and a closing ceremony. Experts and scholars from more than 20 countries and regions conducted exchanges and discussions around the theme of Chinese-style modernization.
