
On October 8th, a seminar on the preparation of the textbook Introduction to Patriotic Education in the New Era was held at Nankai University. Chen Yulu, President of Nankai University, and Xu Zhong, Vice Minister of Publicity Department of Tianjin Municipal Party Committee, attended and delivered speeches. Eight experts and scholars, including Jin Nuo, the former Secretary of the Party Committee of Renmin University of China , Wu Qiantao, senior professor of Liberal Arts Tsinghua University, Huang Rongsheng, the former Secretary of the Party Committee of Southwest University , Feng Ziyi, BoYa Chair Professor of Beijing University , and Liu Jianjun, second-class professor of Renmin University of China , contributed to the preparation and construction of the textbook Introduction to Patriotism Education in the New Era. The meeting was chaired by Wang Xinsheng, Executive Director of the Institute of 21st Century Marxism, Nankai University-CSU.

Chen Yulu pointed out that since the 18th CPC National Congress, the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core has attached great importance to patriotic education. As the basic carrier of education and teaching, textbooks are the key links and important supports for patriotic education in the new era. He stressed that next year, Nankai will usher in the fifth anniversary of General Secretary Xi Jinping's visit to the university, the whole university is scrambling to promote the implementation of all the work, to achieve high-quality development of the actual performance, and to hand over a satisfactory answer to the General Secretary and the Party Central Committee. Among them, writing a high-level reading for patriotic teaching is one of the very important results. In order to further implement the fundamental task of establishing moral education and to better play the role of patriotic education with Nankai characteristics, the school plans to implement "Ten Action Plans" for the Nankai high-quality development and reform. Taking the "Action Plan for the Planning and Construction of Core Curriculum and Teaching Materials" as a guide, Nankai University concentrates the high-quality resources of the whole school and organizes to start the compilation and research of Introduction to Patriotism Education in the New Era. Adhering to Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as a guide, this textbook intends to clarify that the patriotic education in the new era should serve the construction of socialist modernization based on combing and summarizing the basic theories, the course of theoretical development and practical experience of patriotism. According to this fundamental goal, Nankai University puts forward the corresponding thought frameworks and methodological paths in an effort to build a systematic, scientific and authoritative "Nankai Edition" textbook of patriotic education,which will provide strong support for opening up a new situation of patriotic education in the New Era.

Xu Zhong said in his speech that Nankai University has a glorious tradition of patriotism. The preparation of the Introduction to Patriotism Education in the New Era textbook is an important initiative to carry forward the tradition of patriotism in Nankai in the New Era. And it will provide a strong support for the promotion of patriotic education in the New Era, which is of great significance. He pointed out that the preparation of the textbook should run through the red line of adhering to the unity of the love for motherland, party and socialism, deepen the research on patriotic education in the New Era and the interpretation of the spirit of patriotism, and deeply excavate all kinds of patriotism education resources. He hopes that the preparation of the textbook Introduction to Patriotism Education in the New Era will be an opportunity to further deepen the cooperation and exchange between Tianjin and Nankai University, to continuously launch a batch of high-quality results with theoretical depth and wide influence, to continuously promote the in-depth development of philosophical and social sciences with Chinese characteristics, to provide effective support for the establishment of morality and political education, and to contribute to the service of the major development strategies of the country and Tianjin.

Wang Xinsheng, presiding over the meeting, said that the preparation of the Introduction to Patriotism Education in the New Era is timely and significant, and expressed his sincere thanks to the participating experts for their advice and suggestions. He also mentioned that he would seriously draw on the opinions and suggestions of experts and scholars and push forward the preparation of teaching materials of Introduction to Patriotism Education in the New Era in high quality.

Liu Fengyi, Dean of the School of Marxism at Nankai University, introduced the idea of writing the textbook. The Introduction to Patriotism Education in the New Era is basically defined as the textbook of the general education course for contemporary college students, aiming to provide systematic patriotic education for college students in the light of the practice in the New Era based on clarification of the reasoning, theories, and philosophies of patriotism.
The experts and scholars fully affirmed the significance and value of writing the Introduction to Patriotic Education in the New Era and put forward constructive and informative opinions around the actual needs of patriotic education in the New Era.

Jin Nuo said that the preparation of the textbook Introduction to Patriotic Education in the New Era is of great significance. The current outline presents two outstanding features. Firstly, the syllabus is prepared in a very thorough manner, combing in detail the theoretical and practical issues of patriotism and patriotic education, speaking from the basic theory to the historical evolution, covering the key points, difficulties and characteristics of knowledge. Secondly, the design of the teaching materials is innovative. Starting from a problem-oriented approach and focusing on the times, the outline preparation displays a new atmosphere and shows a new paradigm. She emphasized the need to sort out and explain the theoretical issues of patriotism in a more comprehensive and systematic way and to focus on three aspects: the patriotic tradition of the Chinese nation, the theme and main line of patriotism in contemporary China, and the issue of patriotic education for the youth.

Wu Qiantao pointed out that patriotism is both a banner that mobilizes and inspires the Chinese people to unite and struggle and a great force that pushes forward the history of our society. The current textbook outline has a very distinctive historical, contemporary and innovative nature, which contains Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and focuses on the unity of love for the Party, the country and the socialism. He emphasized that the preparation of the textbook should follow the basic logic of the "Three Questions of Patriotism" of Zhang Boling, the former President of Nankai, focus on university students and combine the national level with the individual level from the three aspects of patriotic tradition, patriotic sentiment, responsibility, and commitment.

Huang Rongsheng said that the organization of the preparation of the Introduction to Patriotism Education in the New Era is an important method to deepen the patriotic education of college students and to implement the fundamental task of establishing moral education. The outline of the textbook is clear in its thinking and objectives, not only elaborating the most basic theoretical issues of patriotism, but also running through the historical lineage of patriotism and focusing on the characteristics of the Internet carrier. She suggested further accurate positioning, correcting the writing style, highlighting the political and value-led nature of the teaching materials, and further enriching the basic theories. In the part of historical logic, the teaching materials should highlight the patriotic education in Nankai over the past hundred years.

Feng Ziyi advocated firstly that the nature of the preparation of the textbook should be clarified and the Introduction to Patriotic Education for a New Era should further improve its theoretical nature based on popularization and strengthen its focus in the style and layout of its preparation. Secondly, based on clarifying the theme of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, the textbook should highlight the goals and tasks of Chinese-style modernization and illustrate the roots and soul of patriotism. The textbook also should pay attention to the new era, new features and new changes and respond to the new issues raised by the times. At the same time, the scholastic rationality of the teaching materials should be upgraded, and the views and evaluations of classical scholars and writings should be added appropriately to enhance the influence of the teaching materials.

Liu Jianjun pointed out that Nankai University has a glorious tradition of patriotism and suggested that the preparation of the teaching materials should make full use of Nankai's rich historical data, giving an illustrated, comprehensive and detailed display of Nankai's patriotic course in its entirety. In terms of content, he gave detailed suggestions on how to arrange the proportion of each chapter.

Wu Dongsheng, professor from the School of Marxism of Nankai University, introduced the changes in the contents related to patriotism from the 2006 edition to the 2023 edition of the teaching materials for ideological and political theory courses, stressing the necessity and importance of writing the Introduction to Patriotism Education in the New Era. He said that the textbook is written to lead college students to be loyal patriots.

Li Xiangyang, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Director of the Publicity Department of Nankai University, said that it is crucial to understand the most important spirit and basis for writing the Introduction to Patriotic Education in the New Era. He stressed that it is important to focus on General Secretary Xi Jinping's series of important expositions on patriotic education, the Outline for the Implementation of Patriotic Education in the New Era (2019) and the Outline for the Implementation of Patriotic Education (1994), and to grasp the historical, theoretical, and practical logics of patriotic education in the New Era in the context of comparison, so as to enhance the systematic and scholastic nature of the contents of the textbook.

Li Yuelin, Minister of Academic Affairs of Nankai University, introduced the initiatives and achievements of Nankai University in strengthening the education and teaching of patriotism. She said that it is necessary to further do a good job of research on issues related to patriotism among college students, to seize the pain points of students, to carry out the preparation and use of teaching materials in a more targeted manner, and to make use of new media methods to create new forms of teaching materials for stimulating students' interest in learning.
